PETUALANGAN PERTAMA SHERLOCK HOLMES âPENELUSURAN BENANG MERAHâ IDENTITAS BUKU Judul Asli Sherlock Holmes, A Study In Scarlet Judul Terjemahan Penelusuran Benang Merah Pengarang Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Alih Bahasa B. Sendra Tanuwidjaja Penerbit Gramedia Pustaka Utama Cetakan I, November 2001 Tebal Halaman 216 Halaman SINOPSIS BUKU Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle adalah pengarang cerita fiksi terkenal berkebangsaan Inggris. Cerita pertama yang berjudul A Study In Scarlet diterbitkan pada tahun 1887. Inilah buku petualangan pertama Sherlock Holmes.

In Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet a popular cultural phenomenon is born. We meet two of the most famous characters in modern literary history the consulting detective Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, an army doctor home on sick leave, for the first time. Through Watson we learn a little about the eccentric figure who is his new room-mate at 221B Baker Street, before they encounter their first case an American visitor to the city has been killed in an empty house off the Brixton Road, and the only clue the police have is the mysterious word 'Rache', scrawled in blood-red letters on the wall. As Holmes sets to work with his unique forensic methods, behind the murder a tangled skein of love, religion, and revenge gradually unwinds, taking us from the streets of London to the Utah Territory, and back again. As Nicholas Daly's Introduction describes, out of this gripping tale grew the Holmes and Watson stories that would make Conan Doyle the best-paid author of his time. His creations have become household words, inspiring not only countless adaptations and imitations, but a Sherlock Holmes museum, Sherlock Holmes-themed pubs, and a whole array of Holmesian merchandise, from cushions to jigsaw puzzles. Here, though, we meet Holmes and Watson before they became famous, and we can see how their extraordinary impact on our popular culture derives from the late-Victorian world from which they emerge. The protagonist of the story, a consulting detective to the London police force though they seldom give him credit for his help who solves crimes while accompanied by his roommate John Watson. Though Holmes is highly intelligent, with sharp observational and deductive reasoning skills that allow him to understand a crime scene or deduce a personâs history just by paying close attention, he can also be cold, petty, and arrogant. Though Holmes is vastly knowledgeable about certain areas, such as chemistry and British law, he is equally ignorant about others, such as astronomy. As Watson explains, Holmes is occasionally completely apathetic toward his surroundings but at other times is highly energetic and theatrical, particularly when he has a complex case to solve. Sherlock Holmes Quotes in A Study in Scarlet The A Study in Scarlet quotes below are all either spoken by Sherlock Holmes or refer to Sherlock Holmes. For each quote, you can also see the other characters and themes related to it each theme is indicated by its own dot and icon, like this one . Holmes is a little too scientific for my tastes â it approaches to cold-bloodedness. I could imagine his giving a friend a little pinch of the latest vegetable alkaloid, not out of malevolence, you understand, but simply out of a spirit of inquiry in order to have an accurate idea of the effects. To do him justice, I think that he would take it himself with the same readiness. He appears to have a passion for definite and exact knowledgeâŠ.Yes, but it may be pushed to excess. When it comes to beating the subjects in the dissecting-rooms with a stick, it is certainly taking rather a bizarre shape. Page Number and Citation 10 Explanation and Analysis Let me see â what are my other shortcomings. I get in the dumps at times, and donât open my mouth for days on end. You must not think I am sulky when I do that. Just let me alone, and Iâll soon be right. What have you to confess now? Itâs just as well for two fellows to know the worst of one another before they begin to live together. Page Number and Citation 13 Explanation and Analysis Nothing could exceed his energy when the working fit was upon him; but now and again a reaction would seize him, and for days on end he would lie upon the sofa in the sitting-room, hardly uttering a word or moving⊠I have noticed such a dreamy, vacant expression in his eyes, that I might have suspected him of being addicted to the use of some narcotic, had not the temperance and cleanliness of his whole life forbidden such a notion. Page Number and Citation 15 Explanation and Analysis I consider that a manâs brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose. A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things, so that he has a difficulty in laying his hands upon it. Now the skilful workman is very careful indeed as to what he takes into his brain-attic. He will have nothing but the tools which may help him in doing his work, but of these he has a large assortment, and all in the most perfect order⊠It is of the highest importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out the useful ones. Page Number and Citation 17 Explanation and Analysis Its somewhat ambitious title was âThe Book of Lifeâ, and it attempted to show how much an observant man might learn by an accurate and systematic examination of all that came in his way. It struck me as being a remarkable mixture of shrewdness and of absurdity. The reasoning was close and intense, but the deductions appeared to me to be far-fetched and exaggerated. The writer claimed by a momentary expression, a twitch of a muscle or a glance of an eye, to fathom a manâs inmost thoughts. Deceit, according to him, was an impossibility in the case of one trained to observation and analysis. His conclusions were as infallible as so many propositions of Euclid. So startling would his results appear to the uninitiated that until they learned the processes by which he had arrived at them they might well consider him as a necromancer. Page Number and Citation 19 Explanation and Analysis âThere are no crimes and criminals in these days,â he said, querulously. âWhat is the use of having brains in our profession? I know well that I have it in me to make my name famous. No man lives or has ever lived who has brought the same amount of study and of natural talent to the detection of crime which I have done. And what is the result? There is no crime to detect, or, at most, some bungling villainy with a motive so transparent that even a Scotland Yard official can see through it.â Page Number and Citation 23 Explanation and Analysis âGregson is the smartest of the Scotland Yarders,â my friend remarked; âhe and Lestrade are the pick of a bad lot. They are both quick and energetic, but conventional â shockingly so. They have their knives into one another, too. They are as jealous as a pair of professional beauties. There will be some fun over this case if they are both put upon the scent.â Page Number and Citation 26 Explanation and Analysis âThey say that genius is an infinite capacity for taking pains,â he remarked with a smile. âItâs a very bad definition, but it does apply to detective work.â Page Number and Citation 34 Explanation and Analysis âIâm not going to tell you much more of the case, Doctor. You know a conjurer gets no credit once he has explained his trick; and if I show you too much of my method of working, you will come to the conclusion that I am a very ordinary individual after all.ââI shall never do that,â I answered; âyou have brought detection as near an exact science as it ever will be brought in this world.âMy companion flushed up with pleasure at my words, and the earnest way in which I uttered them. I had already observed that he was as sensitive to flattery on the score of his art as any girl could be of her beauty.âIâll tell you one other thing,â he said. Page Number and Citation 38 Explanation and Analysis I shall have him, Doctor â Iâll lay you two to one that I have him. I must thank you for it all. I might not have gone but for you, and so have missed the finest study I ever came across a study in scarlet, eh? Why shouldnât we use a little art jargon? Thereâs the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it. Page Number and Citation 42 Explanation and Analysis Oh, bless you, it doesnât matter in the least. If the man is caught, it will be on account of their exertions; if he escapes, it will be in spite of their exertions. Itâs heads I win and tails you lose. Whatever they do, they will have followers. âUn sot trouve toujours un plus sot qui lâadmire.â Page Number and Citation 51 Explanation and Analysis âIt donât much matter to you why I hated these men,â he said; âitâs enough that they were guilty of the death of two human beings â a father and a daughter â and that they had, therefore, forfeited their own lives. After the lapse of time that has passed since their crime, it was impossible for me to secure a conviction against them in any court. I knew of their guilt though, and I determined that I should be judge, jury, and executioner all rolled into one. Youâd have done the same, if you have any manhood in you, if you had been in my place.â Page Number and Citation 113 Explanation and Analysis ââŠIt is an open secret that the credit of this smart capture belongs entirely to the well-known Scotland Yard officials, Messrs Lestrade and Gregson. The man was apprehended, it appears, in the rooms of a certain Mr Sherlock Holmes, who has himself, as an amateur, shown some talent in the detective line, and who, with such instructors may hope in time to attain some degree of their skill. It is expected that a testimonial of some sort will be presented to the two officers as a fitting recognition of their services.ââDidnât I tell you so when we started?â cried Sherlock Holmes, with a laugh. âThatâs the result of all our Study in Scarlet; to get them a testimonial!ââNever mind,â I answered; âI have all the facts in my journal, and the public shall know them.â Page Number and Citation 127 Explanation and Analysis Sherlock Holmes Character Timeline in A Study in Scarlet The timeline below shows where the character Sherlock Holmes appears in A Study in Scarlet.
